The companies that make digital tape recorders have made anunprecedented deal with the music industry to prevent consumers frommaking extra copies of tapes.
The agreement clears the way for the sale of the new recordersoutside Japan. They could be on shelves here in a few months.
The manufacturers agreed to change the new DAT recorders so thatthey cannot make copies of tapes that are themselves copies.
The deal was reached after the music industry, which representscomposers, performers and other copyright holders, had threatened tosue manufacturers of DAT recorders, claiming they would be widelyused to copy compact discs.
