Qld: Abigail to hit coast this afternoon

A tropical low off far north Queensland has been upgraded to a category 1 cyclone and
is due to cross the coast near Cairns after midday (AEST).

A Queensland Bureau of Meteorology spokesman says Tropical Cyclone Abigail was about
30km north east of Cairns at 11am (AEST).

The cyclone -- with maximum wind gusts of up 100km an hour -- is moving steadily westward
and is expected to cross the coast within two hours.

State Emergency Service crews are on standby in Cairns.

The bureau has issued a cyclone warning for coastal and island communities …
