Fed: National road toll at 32

SYDNEY, Dec 27 AAP - The national holiday road toll stands today at 32 with no new
fatalities reported overnight.

Since the toll period began at midnight (AEDT) last Thursday, New South Wales has recorded
20 deaths resulting from motor vehicle accidents.

For the same period, Queensland has reported four deaths, South Australia three, Western
Australia and Victoria two, and Canberra one.

Tasmania and the Northern Territory have reported no road deaths during the toll period.

The highest NSW Christmas holiday road toll in more than five years, however, is not
deterring drivers from reckless behaviour.

New South Wales Traffic Services Commander Ron Sorrenson said today measures such as
random breath testing, seatbelts and speed cameras have all been introduced and police
have no more big strategies left.

NRMA Road Service chief executive officer Rob Carter said the increase in NSW road
fatalities didn't mean road safety campaigns had failed.

He said the road toll could have been a lot worse if the campaigns hadn't happened.
